Term 3 Week 2

Today we learned about being a good friend.  I asked the children to get a new piece of paper and bring it to the mat.  We then looked at the paper and noticed how smooth and unruffled it was.  We were then 'nice' to the paper, by being gentle when holding it and just patting it softly.  When we did this the paper stayed the same.  This is like when we are nice to our friends, their good mood stays the same.
Then we decided to 'pretend' to be mean to that piece of paper.  We made an angry face and scrunched up the paper into a ball, and ripped it to pieces.  When we were mean to the paper we saw that we had made it crumple, and it had definitely changed from it's original form.  Sometimes we forget and are mean or nasty to others, and their heart is like the paper.  It crumples when their feelings are hurt, and their heart can also feel like it's broken, like the paper was.  We then felt sorry for the paper and apologised, and tried to make the paper all neat again, but no matter how hard we tried we couldn't get the paper back to it's original state, it had been changed forever.  This is what happens when we hurt our friends.  Even though we may say sorry, they are still hurt and they are never exactly the same again, no matter how hard you try to fix them.
It is very hard to be nice to people all the time, adults find it hard too.  But we need to really try because once we hurt someone we can't take it back, even though we may apologise.  That person will still have some hurt that they carry around.  We can get a new piece of paper but we can't just find new friends to hurt, because we will run out pretty quickly.  We did however get a new piece of paper, and looked after it well.  We drew a picture of ourselves being good friends to others.
