Term 2 Week 6

Our phonics has been going well over the term and most kids know most alphabet sounds.  For the last fortnight we have been learning about the simple digraphs.  A digraph is two letters that come together to make a new sound, like th, sh, ch, er.  These digraphs appear a lot in the reading books and it has been great to see the children spotting these when reading.  Today we did the 'er' sound, and learned that there are tons of words with er at the end.  Our favourite is 'leader'.

For maths we have been learning about number patterns.  A number pattern is when you know that it makes a number without having to count.  For example, you don't have to count 10 fingers, we know that for 10, all our fingers will be out.  We have learned that for 9, only one thumb is kept in, and all other fingers are out.  We have also learned about 4, 5 and 6.  We have been practising these over the week and will continue with this until the children are confident in their finger pattern knowledge.  We are also learning about the hundreds board.  This has all the numbers up to 100, and we have been looking for patterns, such as the row of twenties, fifties etc, and double numerals - that have two of the same number like 55, 77.  We found that on the hundreds board, if you look at all the double numerals they make a line going diagonally down the board.  I have added a new link to the right side of the page - Give a dog a bone.   This is a great website for getting to know the hundreds board.
