Room 2 Sacred Heart School

Winter is well and truly here, but at least the days have been reasonably sunny of late. We have had another busy couple of weeks in Room 2, as well as a couple of birthdays.

We have been using our computer pod regularly over the past fortnight. We have been learning to use the program ‘Garageband’ which records the children’s voices and lets them play it back. This has really helped with their reading, as the children are able to listen to themselves and check, for example, if they are using expression, taking note of punctuation or even speaking clearly. This is preparing them for our ‘read aloud’ assessment, where the children will choose a poem and read it aloud to the class. They will be focusing on reading loudly and clearly, making eye contact and using expression in their voice. The results of our first podcast (voice recordings) are on our blog -

The children have also been learning how to use the computer keyboard and publish their own writing to the computer. They have learned about the space bar, making capital letters, fixing their errors using the backspace buttons and where all the letter keys are. This has really helped with their writing as well, by reinforcing the need for spaces/capitals/punctuation etc.

In Maths we have been learning about adding and subtracting. We have been learning to use ‘materials’ such as counters, chairs, children, fingers and anything else that is available to help add and subtract. We have also been working on what these number sentences look like, so the children have been practising with some maths sheets.

A reminder that next Tuesday we will be having a pyjama party day in Room 2. The children have been trying to earn some money to donate to Orphan Aid. They are allowed to wear their pyjamas but not bring any toys please. We are going to make huts out of sheets and do our work in the huts for the day. The children are looking forward to it. If our child travels by bus or walks to school they are able to bring their pyjamas in a bag and get changed at school.
